On October 8, 2007, the first World Cup tournament began in Tokyo, Japan. Teams in the competition represented Belgium, England, Denmark, France, Japan, Portugal, and the USA, along with a representative from Canada in attendance. The US went undefeated, with only France managing a tie against them in the opening round. This placed Team USA against Belgium in the semi-finals where they earned another victory. Team USA faced France again in the final, only to defeat them in a sudden death penalty kick shootout to win the first-ever World Cup competition.
