Before Tyler Hernandez was introduced to the sport of Power Soccer, he played Challenger Baseball. This wasn't enough for him as he “was looking for a sport where {he} could be independent.” At the age of eight, Hernandez tried Power Soccer at a Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp and never looked back.

Hernandez, who plays for the Tampa Thunder, really wanted to make the team this go around, however he had some obstacles to overcome. “The opportunity to play for Team USA came at a time when I was heading into college and didn’t know if I could dedicate my time to both school and soccer,” Hernandez said. He didn't want this extremely privileged experience to pass and he was happy to be asked to join the team.

As soon as Hernandez received the call on his 19th birthday, he “immediately made plans to get into the gym that following weekend, and every weekend since, for extra time to practice and {did} drills.” He was so motivated that if he could not find a place to practice, Hernandez would kick the ball around in his garage.

Hernandez is about to start his third year at the University of Tampa, as he is majoring in Accounting as he hopes to become a CPA and own his own firm some day. When he finds free time for himself, Hernandez “enjoys playing video games, watching sports on TV, and casually hanging out with family and friends.” Hernandez’s favorite video game is Rocket League, as the game reminds him about Power Soccer. “I am a huge Real Madrid fan, and my favorite show is Game of Thrones,” Hernandez also explained.

Hernandez hopes to “inspire a young athlete to work hard and dedicate himself or herself to represent their country in Power Soccer” at next year’s World Cup. As for the future of the sport, Hernandez wants ”the sport to eventually be televised and be a part of the Paralympics.”
